If you’re stuck in Melbourne or somewhere over the border and you’re dreaming of a trip to Bright, Beechworth or the King Valley, these local businesses have found a way to bring the High Country to you.

High Country at Home is a series of interactive online classes and experiences designed to whisk you away from your humdrum surroundings and plonk you in the middle of Victoria’s gorgeous High Country. You might even pick up a new skill along the way.

A spring trip to the little towns tucked amidst the mountain ranges is a treat for the senses. Discovering beautiful mountain trails to walk and cycle as the snow melts and new growth bursts forth. Taking a breather to sip seriously good coffee. Eating creamy, delicious pasta which is so fresh it transports you to Italy. Winery hopping through the hills. Soothing your aching muscles with an indulgent massage after all that walking.

With just a bit of imagination and a visit to the High Country at Home website, you can recreate these magical experiences in your own home. It’s simple - just choose your experience, book online and wait for the event pack to be delivered to your door with everything you need. Then it’s just a matter of jumping online and having some fun in the workshop.

Here are some of the classes on offer:

Risotto Done Right with Hedonistic Hiking

Mick and Jackie should have been leading hiking tours through the snow-capped mountains of Italy right now but instead, they’re teaching you to make a decadent, carby dinner. Combining the flavours of Northern Italy with the produce of the High Country, they’ll teach you to cook a flavour packed saffron and mushroom risotto. And yes, there is wine included for you AND the risotto.

Be Your Own Coffee & Wine Judge

Become a certified coffee or wine snob with this class in judging. Ben is a coffee roaster and Raquel is a vigneron and they’re coming together to teach you about the similarities between your two favourite sips. You’ll learn the intricacies of preparing, tasting and judging coffee and wine and will hopefully come away with an even bigger appreciation of both.

Katrina Pizzini’s Art of Gnocchi Making

Potatoes and pasta, our two favourite carbs combined, what’s not to love about gnocchi? Katrina will walk you through how to make the perfect pillowy gnocchis plus two herbaceous Italian sauces to go with them. Follow her recipes for a napoli and a burnt butter and sage sauce, then Katrina will school you in the art of wine pairing.

Gin Appreciation by Glenbosch

Even some of the most seasoned gin drinkers will be surprised by the unique flavours in this tasting. Ever tried Rooibos gin? Dirk will show you this gorgeous red gin made in his own kitchen with Australian botanicals, plus four other tasty local and international gins. You’ll even learn how to make your own bathtub gin like it’s the prohibition era.
