5 great family activities - The Entrance, Central Coast, NSW

March 10, 2020 / By Ailsa Kemp

The Entrance is an extremely popular beachside town on the Central Coast of Australia where Tuggerah Lake meets the Pacific Ocean. For years, it has been enticing families and travellers out of Sydney for a relaxing and laid back weekend away by the ocean. Since it's only 1.5 hours' drive from the city, The Entrance is a great destination for families who don't want to travel too far. We've put together our top 5 best things to do at The Entrance for families so sit back and plan your next weekend away!

1. The public pelican feed

We couldn't possibly put this list together without mentioning its biggest attraction: the daily pelican feed. At 3:30 PM every day, no matter the weather, you can bet your last dollar that there will be an influx of hungry birds on the wharf, ready for their fish. Not only is it amazing to be so close to these magnificent birds, but local experts also offer educational commentary on their behaviours and keep an eye on the birds' health, often removing hooks and lines from their bodies.

2. Memorial Park

This is an absolute must if you're travelling with children. Memorial Park is at the heart of The Entrance, a stone's throw from the pelican feed and is a fantastic playground complete with jungle gyms, paddling pools and giant chess boards. On the weekends and during school holidays, Memorial Park is where you (well, your kids) will want to be. Carnival amusements, rides, slides, stalls and games are set up on the green areas to give the kids extra entertainment.

3. The Entrance Ocean Baths

Who could come to the Central Coast and not want to dip a toe or two into the glistening ocean? Well, if you don't want to go to a beach with rough waves but still want to get your kids in the water, the ocean baths are for you. With 3 pools to choose from, including a children's wading pool, everyone can cool off in the ocean.

4. The Entrance Boat Shed

Fancy taking the family out for a day on a boat? You can't go past the Boat Shed. Built in 1927, the boat shed will give you all you need to explore Tuggerah lake for an afternoon. Take the kids fishing and show them how to use the bait, or hire a kayak and paddle up the lake to see things you can't from a car!

5. Go for a walk

The Entrance is teaming with places to take the kids on a lovely walk or bike ride. You can stroll along the boardwalk, follow the Heritage Walk and learn about the town's history or strap on those boots and head into one of the nearby national parks for a gorgeous bush walk to hunt for a waterfall.
