The NSW South Coast’s Eurobodalla region is a foodie paradise. With an amazing array of fresh local produce fuelling a thriving dining scene, travellers visiting Batemans Bay and surrounds are greeted with numerous eateries serving up some remarkably good food. As you’d expect in a town located at the heart of the Oyster Coast, fresh seafood features prominently at many Batemans Bay restaurants and cafes. But whatever your appetite and no matter what you’re craving, there’s a diverse range of dishes and cuisines to choose from. Here are five of the best restaurants in the Batemans Bay area.
Tucked away in an unassuming location at Quays Hotel, The Sandbar may not seem like anything overly special at first — but don’t be fooled. This Batemans Bay beauty received its first “chef’s hat” in January 2018 and has built a well-earned reputation for offering a dining experience that’s a class above. French techniques and Japanese flavours go hand in hand at chef David Tinker’s first restaurant, and the fresh seasonal ingredients are treated with the utmost respect. The degustation menu is to die for, with every course providing a unique and subtle combination of flavours. Each dish is a work of art in its own right, while the venue offers an intimate setting with panoramic water views. Seriously, book yourself a table now and thank us later.
Ok - we know this one's not in Batemans Bay but we just had to add it to the list. Situated on the banks of the Moruya River overlooking Deua National Park, The River could be worth visiting simply to experience the lovely setting. But it’s the food that will leave the most lasting memory. Classic French meets modern Australian on The River’s diverse menu, and chef Peter Compton is committed to showcasing the best of what the Eurobodalla and Far South Coast have to offer. The five-course tasting menu is highly recommended for those dining in a group, while all dishes can be matched with a glass (or maybe a bottle) of something from the impressive wine list. To get to Moruya, simply follow the Princes Highway south of Batemans Bay for around 20 minutes.
On The Pier (above)
Located in a former punt house on Clyde River, On The Pier is a contemporary seafood restaurant in an enviable location. With a deck overhanging the water, you can kick things off with a cocktail before sitting down to tasty fare from along the South Coast. The menu at On The Pier changes with the seasons, but you can always expect to find some locally - caught seafood (including fresh Clyde River oysters) to tempt your taste buds. On The Pier is open for lunch Friday, Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Friday and Saturday, offering relaxed dining in a truly special setting.
Craving something other than seafood? Treat yourself to a taste of the subcontinent at Kohli’s Indian Restaurant. From its waterfront location on the Clyde River, Kohli’s dishes up a host of authentic dishes from regions right across India. There’s a huge selection of lovingly crafted curries and vegetarian dishes, as well as all the entrees and sides you know and love. Other highlights include a variety of beers on tap, a decent wine list and first-class service — what more could you want?
Sam’s Pizzeria (above)
If Indian doesn’t appeal, step right next door to Sam’s Pizzeria. This waterfront eatery is open seven nights a week and for Friday lunch, dishing up hearty family food in a laid-back, friendly setting. In fact, in the 2018 Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence, Sam’s was named best pizza restaurant in regional NSW. The secret to Sam’s success is in the quality of the ingredients used, from plump olives and fresh herbs to a mouth-watering variety of meats. The pizza menu is extensive and ranges from the simply delicious margherita to the Cajun prawn and a host of more exotic creations. Pastas, salads, starters and desserts also feature, so there’s something to satisfy the whole family.
