Recently, The Weekender caught up with Pip Brett, owner of Jumbled, an eclectic homewares store in the gorgeous NSW town of Orange. Located in a renovated Masonic Hall (made over with the help of the team from Studio Esteta in Melbourne), it is inspired by concept stores such as Merci and Anthropologie in Paris and along with homewares, includes original art, cool fashion labels, and a café, called Nimrod’s.
What do you love about living in Orange?
Orange is SUCH a beautiful place to live, run a business, and bring up a family. It has everything you could possibly need; talented producers and great restaurants, scenic countryside, amazing wineries, fabulous schools and a thriving tourism sector. Just a 40 minute flight (or a 3.5 hour drive) to Sydney, we're also super close to the city if we need to be!
Where are your favourite places to visit?
When I'm not in Orange - these are my top 3:
Forster: My grandpa built one of the first houses on One Mile Beach and it is still my fave beach in the whole wide world. It's a back to basics holiday - fishing, sun, sea and sand dunes. I spent every summer there with my family and I'm so pleased I can take my kids there now!
Morocco: Everything is good in Morocco - it's as simple as that! The people, the food, the design, the colour, the accomodation ... My good friend Julia Green and I take tour groups there twice each year and I just fall more in love with it every time!
Los Enamorados in Ibiza: This place blew my mind when I visited earlier this year. You could not dream up a more fabulous place in your wildest of dreams . Add it to your travel wish list and I promise you will not be disappointed!
Any hidden secrets/tips for people who are planning to visit Orange?
You absolutely must plan a weekend getaway to Orange! If I have friends visiting from the city our first stop is a visit to our amazing vineyards. My personal favourites are Philip Shaw, Word of Mouth Wines (they do the best complementary cheese platter and have a ceramic studio inside the cellar door) and Heifer Station which is especially great if you have kids as they have a petting zoo!
The Farmers Markets are on every second Saturday of the month and it's a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air, grab a coffee and something delicious from one of our local producers. The atmosphere is always buzzing, and it's nice to chat with the people who have made or grown your food.
Our best kept secret is a picturesque bushwalk at Ophir Reserve. We used to gold pan out there as kids, and now I bring my own kids there for beautiful walks along the creek. There is so much history here from the gold rush and its a great way to immerse yourself in nature. You can even take a tour through a working goldfield! Definitely worth a look!
Where would we find you at 10am on a Sunday?
Most likely grabbing breaky at Groundstone Cafe with Speedy and the kids before heading out to our new block to take our dog Rosie for a walk. We're SUPER excited to be building on the block later this year and will be documenting the entire process, so stay tuned!
