Exploring Tasmania’s East Coast is hard work, we know, with all that hiking, wine-tasting, cheese-gorging, penguin spotting and sunset viewing every single day. How exhausting!

So start your day right with a sensational breakfast and make sure your energy levels match the activities ahead. Whether you’re planning to soak up the visual delight of the Bay of Fires or tackle the best walks in Freycinet National Park, you’ll find a perfect breakfast place to start the day right. Here’s my collection of top breakfast places on the East Coast, all offering seriously good food, great coffee and a very friendly start to your day.

Pasini’s Cafe, Bicheno
Ideally located right next door to the Bicheno Penguin Tour office, Pasisni’s is a gem of a place for a sumptuous mid-morning breakfast. This spot is a bit of a local institution and renowned as a woodfired pizza palace (it gets very busy for dinner) but their breakfast offerings are also great. From homemade sourdough toast to steaming porridge topped with fruit compote and free-range eggs, any which way you want, this place is ideal for both sweet and savoury brekky delights.

If you need a little extra energy, go the whole hog and start your day with poached eggs, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, wrapped in bacon and drenched in hollandaise sauce. BOOM!

Ge’ograph Restaurant & Espresso Bar, Coles Bay
Ge’ograph is one of the best eateries in the East Coast and certainly one of the top foodie places in the Coles Bay/Freycinet area, revered for its great international cuisine always served with a side-dish of stunning views. The restaurant and espresso bar is one street back from the Esplanade yet their first-floor terrace offers sweeping views across the bay, overlooking the rocky cliffs of Freycinet.

If you're planning to explore the national park, this is about as wonderful a breakfast spot as you can possibly get. Their brekky offerings are awesome and varied, with sweet and savoury crêpes, egg dishes, chia bowls and plenty of smashed avocado on sourdough to satisfy the taste buds, feast the eyes and fill the stomach.

Artifakt Gallery & Café, Swansea
If you think preparing a perfect breakfast is an art form, then we know you’ll absolutely love this place. We do! Combining two of life’s best indulgences (art and food) Artifakt offers a great sensory experience first thing in the morning. We’re talking corn and salsa fritters, home-made muffins, the fluffiest French toast you’ll ever have and a bowl of muesli with coconut yoghurt that’ll make your soul sing.

The coffee is always on point – steaming hot – and the art on the walls is all on sale. A win-win breakfast place on the East Coast if ever there was one!

Swims East Coast Coffee, Scamander
If you’re meandering the north stretch of the East Coast to soak up the sight of Falmouth’s stunning blowholes, you’ll soon realise that this is a scarcely inhabited area. Fabulous for wilderness adventures but not exactly overflowing with delicious breakfast places. That’s why you should head up to Scamander and stop at the Swims East Coast Coffee, the breakfast sweet-spot of the north-east.

This quaint ‘shack’ is actually a genially converted shipping container (on stilts, with views!) and boasts a quaint little outdoor deck. Single origin coffee, excellent juices and home-made cakes are always on the take, as well as delectable toasted sandwiches with a myriad of fillings. The brainchild of a young entrepreneurial (and very artistic) couple, Swims East Coast Coffee only opened in February 2018 but has already amassed a cult following. They’re only open until 2-3pm though, so ideal for that early drive-day brekky.
