The demand for organic wines, both internationally and within Australia, is growing. And for good reason. Less manipulation in both the field and cellar can lead to a wine that is more real, and definitely more natural. Organic wine is often the best expression of the grape, the land and environment in which it is grown.
By its simplest definition, organic wines are wines made using organic farming practices. In the vineyard, grapes are grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides and other chemical fertilisers, encouraging the natural ecosystem of the vineyard to do its thing on its own. Organic wines are not necessarily preservative free however, instead all additives must be organic too.

The Kalleske name is synonymous with accessible yet high calibre Barossan wines. Winner of the Australian Certified Organic Wine Business of the Year in 2019, this Greenock winery in the northern Barossa Valley has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998.

When you visit the Kalleske Cellar door you can choose from a wide variety of tasting experiences including Barossa Classics, Shiraz Aficionado, Whites & Lights, or your own flight of six wines. Hayes Family Wines
Hart of the Barossa pride themselves on delivering wine that is as pure as the site of its origins. Planted in 1902, they are the Barossa Valley’s first Certified Organic vineyard, and have put significant effort into maintaining biologically active organic soils to ensure grapes ripen with full flavour and a distinct sense of place.
Descendants of 1845 settlers, the Hart family are proud custodians of their patch of the Barossa, ideally located between Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston. Running their cellar door from a circa 1900 horse stable, their offerings include iconic Friday lunches. And if you’re clever enough to book your Barossa trip for the second weekend of the month, book ahead for a long lunch in the tasting shed where wines (including the occasional back vintage) and gourmet fare will flow over five luxurious courses. Yum!

Moving to the Barossa in 2014, Hayes Family Wines grow their vines using organic and biodynamic farming practices, with some of their vineyards first planted in the 1870s.
Certified organic, their vines are now free from unnatural sprays and fertilisers, and the family are proud to do no harm to the environment surrounding their vines, creating better tasting wines in the process. Championing the big varieties of the region, visit Hayes on the western ridge of the Barossa for bold Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Semillon wines.
The team offer a variety of unique experiences, from barrel tasting with winemaker Andrew Seppelt, to tawny blending sessions, tours that incorporate a stroll through the vineyards, and winemaker estate tastings in their beautifully central farm-style cellar door surrounded by old vines.

Certified Organic and Biodynamic since 2014, viticulturists turned winemakers Suzi and Wayne create food-friendly wines that suit the types of food they like to eat.
With both an Eden Valley and Vine Valley site, the couple and their growing family make a couple of Pet Nat wines, as well as exploring some northern Rhone grapes such as Roussanne and Marsanne, as well as your more classic Barossan-grown Rhone varietals.
Aside from Saturday afternoons, Smallfry take tastings by appointment only, because they like to treat you to something a bit more personal. Make a booking and over three hours enjoy a tour of their biodynamic site, tasting, and paired plates for $80 per head.

Raised on a vineyard and with Barossan roots dating back to the mid 1800s, Damien Tscharke and the family winery are proud custodians of their historic vineyards.
Certified organic and biodynamic, Tscharke are fuelled by environmental conscientiousness, producing minimal waste and using minimal resources. This means decreasing their consumption of energy and water, utilising solar power and repurposing their waste and stormwater for vineyard irrigation, among other things.
Producing a mix of classic Barossan varietals with other favourites from across the globe, including Gewurtraminer, Touriga Nacional, Graciano and Savagnin, there’s something to please every palate.
Visit Tscharke’s Place and their charming cellar door in Marananga for a wine flight, or kick back with a bottle in their garden. You can also book in for a more immersive experience with a tour of the biodynamic vineyard, and gain a real understanding of the environmental way to manage vineyards and treat organic grapes.
